Character
Motivation - What is It?
Motivation drives a
character's action in fiction writing, especially in a
character-driven fiction. Below is answers to questions you may have
regarding fiction character's motivation.
Character
Motivation Advice for Writing a Good Novel
Why is
character motivation important?
It's
important because it helps you write a better story when you know
the reasons behind your character's actions. Also, your readers have
to believe in your character in order to buy into the character's
storyline. You can demonstrate your character's motivation through
action or through your character's words.
Readers want to
like your story. They either purchased the book or borrowed it from
the library. When someone makes that type of commitment, they want
to enjoy the book.
Does an
antagonist have to have motivation or is that only for the
protagonist?
There's debate on this issue. Some writers believe that antagonist's
actions should have a reason(s) behind it because motivation
makes an antagonist "likeable" or "understood. For
example, if your character is a bully and the reader knows the bully
is abused at home, the story comes full circle.
Others writers
believe that motivation doesn't necessarily matter. Write the story
the way you feel is best. If you receive feedback that character
motivation is missing, then revisit your story.
How do I
include character motivation?
You don't have to spell out your character's motivations by writing,
"Kim never had her father's love so she choose bad
lovers." Trust the reader to follow the story by showing
motivation through examples.
In a scene, show
the relationship between her and her father. Then scenes later, show
her relationship with the men she meets. Readers will make the
connection without you connecting the dots for them.
Should
minor characters have motivation?
It depends. If a minor character does something that spins the story
in a different direction, he or she may need motivation. However, if
your character plays an insignificant part, then
motivation doesn't come into play.
Final Tips on
Writing Fiction
Character
development is the backbone of fiction work. You should determine
your character's psychological needs and personality traits.
Your
character's outlook drives the story. Find his or her motivator
whether its building strong relationships, getting away from an
abusive situation, or coming of age.
As
a character writing exercise, jot down your character's problems and
outline how he or she will overcome those issues.
