Cool Character
Names
Naming your
character is a serious task. Selecting perfect cool character names
is a process that can take days, even weeks.
Tips for
Writers: How to Choose Cool Character Names
Don't choose a
character name just because you think it's cool. Every name should
reflect the personality of your character. So if your favorite name
is Amber, and Amber doesn't fit your character then move on to
another name.
There should be a
rhythm between the first and last name. Before you select a name,
say the name out loud. What does it sound like? Does the full name
flow easily? Lame names never ring true. For example, Bertha Dubois
leaves a lot to be desired. On the other hand, Alison Dubois has a
nice beat.
For inspiration,
review celebrity baby names, read a thesaurus, consider names of the
seasons, fruit, months of the year. The possibilities are endless
when coming up with cool character names.
The key to choosing
the perfect name: your characters should have real names. Meaning
the names should sound like they belong to a real life person.
Select an array of
first and last names, write each on separate pieces of paper, place
the first names in one hat and the last names in another hat, and
pull out one slip of paper from each. This fun game will give you
alternative cool character names to consider.
