Creative Writing Exercises

Creative writing exercises also known as creative writing prompts serve as a catalyst for your writing. Whether you are writing a story that is literary or mainstream, you story should include the following: dialogue, narrative description, and use of all the senses. As a writer, you can let your imagination run wild. Your writing process or method is a personal creative journey. You can use a narrator that fits your story and create a world that draws in the reader.

You can use one of the writing challenges below to jumpstart your fiction writing.

5 Writing Ideas

Creative Writing Exercise #1: Develop an interesting character who stands on the subway platform offering unsolicited advice to people waiting to enter the train. He gained a reputation for having keen insight on the lives of people. So much so that riders purposely missed the subway for their "advice turn." Word spread and pretty soon people who didn't need to take that particular subway stood on the platform to listen and to receive advice. Write a short story about this homeless man and the people he touched.

Creative Writing Exercise #2: A woman laughed at a genocide exhibit. Perhaps she laughed because she was nervous. She wasn't quite sure and neither was the crowd. Write a story with 750 words about this woman, the exhibit, and the crowd.

Creative Writing Exercise #3: A ghost gets lost and haunts the wrong house. Write a story that interweaves the ghosts previous life and how she ended up living in the wrong house after her death.

Creative Writing Exercise #4: A man is traveling alone and he chooses a random bar to have a cold beer. He sits at a bar listening to "come ons." He notices the rhythm of the lines and studies the techniques of the men. He decides he will use the phrases that flop on women to see if the lines work for him. For writing practice, create a story about this man and his night at a bar.

Creative Writing Exercise #5: Take a headline from a newspaper or a blog and write a fictional story based on the headline. You can also use a book title and write a story around the title.
