Book Editing
Services: What You Should Know
Should writers hire
editing services before submitting your manuscript or proposal to
publishers? This is a debate on writing forums that comes up from
time to time.
There are some who
are adamant writer's should learn how to edit their own book and
should only rely on beta readers for advice. Others claim beta
readers are providing editing services, albeit for free, so it's
perfectly fine for new writers to hire fiction editing services.
Each viewpoint has validity. Let's take a look at the pros and cons.
Reasons to Use
Custom Editing Services
When you are a new
writer and you don't have access to beta readers you can trust, a
book editing service is a viable option.
Editing services
are not the same as proofreading
services. With editing and writing services the editor will not
look for punctuation, but will look at the quality of your language. The
editor will get back to you with revision ideas, but that doesn't
mean you have to implement the changes. You'll receive food for
thought.
The publishing
world is a business and you want to put your best foot forward.
Reasons Not to Use
Writing Services
You can get scammed
very easily. Many of these services charge per word count and the
cost can run thousands of dollars.
Even if you can afford
a first round of edits, you may need more and when you rely too
heavily on paid editing services, you can go bankrupt. And chances
are that if your book is picked up, your advance won't cover the
money you laid out.
How to Choose an
Editing Services
Ask who is on the
editorial team and who is going to read your manuscript. Is it a
freelance writer or someone who has a book(s) published.
See if the editing
services will read and critique your first five to ten pages before
you commit to paying for the entire manuscript.
Do your research
and ask for referrals. Speaking to satisfied clients who recommend
the service can help you make an educated decision.
